Humans Are Built For Long Distance Running

It’s not surprising, but with the injuries I sustained last year while running 40-50km a week, it was apparent that something was going on. It’s obvious that many runners pound the pavement way too hard, relying on their shoes to absorb the impact. This is why flat soles have made a comeback. You could always run barefoot or use a Vibram Five-Fingers , Personally, I’d like to cut down the chances of cutting my feet, so I’ll try running at least one a week with Five-Fingers. On a hot day, the

7 Marathons on 7 Continents: Your Guide to Running 42.195 km Across the Globe

There’s no better way to see the world a piece at a time than on foot. If that one foot should happen to strike the pavement harder and faster than that of your walking travel companion, well… the meek may inherit the Earth, but the slow can eat my dust and read whatever clever phrase I had specially made on the back of my shirt. The marathon used to be the ultimate test of human endurance dating back to ancient Greece. Now, with runners like Scott Jurek making 100-mile races in the dese

World Cup playoff draw – your views

Draw for the European World Cup playoffs: Republic of Ireland v France Portugal v Bosnia-Herzegovina Greece v Ukraine Russia v Slovenia Two-legged ties to be played on Nov 14 and 18. All you runners come forward and register for the Inaugural Sister Cities International 5K Race & Festival for World Peace on Saturday, October 24th (9am) . What? You are training for the Marine Corps Marathon you say? Even better because running a 5K the day before the Marine Corps is like a walk in the park warm up for elite athletes like you. I’m no running expert, so don’t take my word for it. This is just what I’ve been told by real runners. The only time I run is when a t

Chicago Marathon: Cancer survivors

For twenty years, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team in Training program has organized groups to condition runners for a marathon. The lavender shirts are common sites in all types of races, but especially 26.2 mile contests. I saw at least a hundred of them during Sunday's Bank of America Chicago Marathon. On the left is a cancer survivor, on the right is a man who informs other entrants that he is "7 years cancer free." God bless you both. Technorati tags: Chicago Marathon
